Incidence of Youth Sports Injuries Growing
posted 08/21/2010

The following are excerpts from an article in the April 1, 2010 edition of the Wall Street Journal:  "Youth sports injuries are reaching epidemic proportions," reports Alabama orthopedic surgeon, James Andrews. Dr. Andrews treats professional athletes. The incidence of youth sports injuries is rising. Some of the increase comes from the growing number of kikds who participate in sports. Another factor is the increasing number of kids who specialize in a single sport at young ages and who play year round. "They're putting more stress on their growing skeletons," says Dr. Peter Millett, a surgeon at the Steadman Clinic, Vail Colorado.

The Board of Directors of Wilmington Lacrosse echoes these concerns. We urge our athletes to play different sports throughout the year in order to avoid overuse of any muscle group. It has also been shown that an investment in a good mouth guard could deter the incidence of concussions. Click for information about Gladiator Mouth Guards
